Since the Similac branded formula has come under fire due to this episode of contamination I thought it would be good to recommend some of the alternatives to the Similac formula. The company behind Similac branded baby formulas has begun a voluntary recall of some of its products. After a review of its products it found that in one of their production areas species of common beetle. Although the FDA said that the beetles don't pose any threat there is a possibility that infants may experience gastrointestinal discomfort due to the small insect parts irritating the GI tract.

The executive vice president of Abbott, Holger Liepmann said:

"Abbott understands that parents expect to feed their children only the highest quality product. We are taking this action so that parents know that the infant formula products they provide unquestionably meet the highest quality standards for which they are known. We regret any inconvenience this situation poses to parents and consumers."
